A Weaving We Will Go

 A weaving we will go...

First of all, I've been inspired by the weaving over at Jude's and Mary S's lil stick loom...I tried one for myself.

I used the cotton black & white bakery wrap to warp the loom. Trying to build the loom to be sturdy enough to weave on. So far, so good.

I began by fastening the sticks together, using an X style wrap. It still moved a bit, but I figured the warp and weft would hold it in place.

I warped it by wrapping it around - back & forth. Doing it this way leaves one warp thread on top and the next part underneath, so a wide gap. I'm not sure if I like it that way or not. However, in the part I have woven so far, I notice that the act of weaving does bring those two sides closer together. So, okay then.

I have it partly completed and have a few thoughts. I like it so far, insomuch that it is working. I noticed that the weaving is very regular, tight (looks like my Medicine Bags), especially as I have not increased or decreased to create 'waves' at all. So I've landed on stripes. Ha.

I used the same fibers from the last medicine bags, as they were close at hand and I thought their natural colors would look good with the Oak Sticks. Okay then.

What I want to try next is to make one that is more wonky, colorful and with different techniques for spacing...since those were some of the elements that inspired me about Mary S's weaving. It's been fun playing.

I've also been remembering weaving with children and commented somewhere about my school age group weaving on forks. Then, in unrelated reading, while searching for the Hilary Clinton fork (pictured in the link), I discovered this short History of the Fork. Interesting. I was then reminded of my own fork, which I drew and documented and recalled an old fork story too! You can see all of that HERE. Timing is everything. Ha.

Additionally, I removed the last cloth and string from the dye pot. The water was filled with tea bags, rusty things (wrapped in the cloth) and walnuts. It had been sitting out there for a while and was so warm to the touch!

*NEWS BREAK: Weather Report...we are in another heatwave. At least 100 degrees every day. It is hot, which we are tired of, but it makes for a great dye pot! There has been a fire across the valley (so not close). The "Bouquet Fire" 63% contained. Heat and breezes = not a good mix. Now back to the blog post...

The string is now "dulled down" and should make for a much less bold warp thread. The cloth has many interesting marks and spots of color. It (of course) looked even better when still wet, but I like how it came out. It smells strongly of tea.

There you have the brief doings of hot October days.

How does the weather inspire or discourage your making and other adventures ?

May you find things to do in every weather

May you find new things to explore

May you find things you enjoy and things you can live with

Hope it cools down soon! The black walnuts are raining down here this week. Maybe next year I’ll have the energy to do something with them. ~Dee

Looking good! I have some weaving ideas in mind. Need to get the last of the indigo harvested and do something with it before the weather changes more...
