Melted Snow

Circle of Friends pic by CW ©2025

3 days ago I posted a list of power words...next, I went quiet and closed my blog doors. In between, among other things, I was at Grace's and Margery's (earlier tonight) - and I was deeply touched by their words and our community. So, here I am with my doors open again and my heart open, always.

The snow melted...and we're still holding on to one another.

More soon...

*NOTE: All photos taken in the state of Oregon. Here it was sunny, hazy and warm and the birds were singing their Song of Spring.

How do you feel about the times you change your mind?

May you close down

May you regroup

May you stay open

⌘〰️

I chose to listen to an old John Denver album while I sewed trim on the Christmas stocking and did some weaving. I've thought of this recently...that I don't have any of my albums/45's anymore, but I can easily access those old tunes online. I must keep my patience about the commercials, but that's okay. Any music I can dream of for free, right at my fingertips. It doesn't get much better than that, eh?

Does anyone know the correct name for this button-fastener? You can see how it opens (above). I'm having trouble visualizing how it would be attached and work on a particular garment. One side is labeled "NOV 11 1902". The other side is not readable to me.

So, today it was John Denver's Rocky Mountain High album. I know and remembered each song. But, something interesting happened...after listening to this since maybe 1974, I actually Heard the lyrics of Darcy Farrow in a new way. I made the connections between those lyrics and my beloved Northern Nevada. How did I never notice this before? How did I not connect the dots when I started traveling that way in 1977-78? To this day, I think of sections of the Walker River, on highway 395 before it gets to Walker, CA. The many times I stopped there in my older teen years. The way I dream of this place. Then to surprise me even more...the lyric about Yerrington, NV. I had a friend up there who grew up in Yerrington. His parents still lived there, so they visited out that way a lot. I remember a drive out there when my son was a baby and my ex was searching hard for work. It is so beautiful out that way. I still remember the wind of that day, along with the bottle warmer, which was suppose to plug into the lighter and worked not at all. Ha.

The backstory of the song here at Wikipedia sent me down a long rabbit hole of memories.

The Truckee (River) up in Reno...near the Hospital there and good old Virginia City - the old west, rather touristy town (fun all the same)...and the deeply loved Carson Valley plain. That Valley still holds my heart.

The Wikipedia page tells the story of how Gillette wrote this song partly based on someplace near there where he'd lived as a child. If that doesn't speak to the magic, I don't know what would.

"The place names are actual places around the region of the high valleys and the Walker River in Nevada, where Tom lived when he was eight or nine years old."

Lyrics
Where the walker runs down to the Carson Valley PlainThere lived a maiden, Darcy Farrow was her nameThe daughter of old Dundee and a fair one was sheThe sweetest flower that bloomed o'er the rangeHer voice was as sweet as the sugar candyHer touch was as soft as a bed of goose downHer eyes shone bright like the pretty lightsThat shone in the night out of Yerrington townShe was courted by Young VandamereA fine lad was he as I am to hearHe gave her silver rings and lacy thingsAnd she promised to wed before the snows came that yearBut her pony did stumble and she did fallHer dyin' touched the hearts of us one and allYoung Vandy in his pain put a bullet through his brainAnd we buried them together as the snows began to fallThey sing of Darcy Farrow where the Truckee runs throughThey sing of her beauty in Virginia City tooAt dusky sundown to her name they drink a roundAnd to young Vandy whose love was true

Later I moved on to James Taylor's, "Walking Man" album. I hadn't heard that in years!

Much of the stocking is now done. I have only to stitch and add the name/birthdate...stitch shut the top edges and upper parts on the side...and add the 'hook' for hanging. I chatted with the Grandma tonight and she gave me the name, that is ready and waiting for his birth! Almost there now.

I also got a lot done on the mini-wall hanging. I'm so curious about this experiment...what will it be like taking it off the loom? What will I do with the ends? Will I choose to add another Oak Stick on the bottom? All of these choices will be made very soon. I thought of my many recent photos and Stephanie while weaving a very blue sky with white clouds 🙂

NOTE: I opened up the "page" above, which I created to hold my WORDLE stories. I'll add to it as I go, but as of tonight, it is up to date.

May you see old things in new ways (again and again)

May you play around

May you find and enjoy the music that speaks to you

Peaks & Valleys

 Over at CJ's this morning, I looked over her Sunday Selections and then followed a link or two to discover what this blog-land game was all about. Ah, a way to share old photos, an abundance of photos. I get it.

Additionally, over at Elephant's Child ( a link I saw at CJ's and not someone I've visited before), I saw Words for Wednesday...word prompts. I thought that may be fun since I've been enjoying my own made up writing games, prompted by the online word games I play.

This reminded me of Wordless Wednesday, which some blogging folks like to do, even if it's hard for me to leave words out...I really do like seeing a bunch of images to imagine things on my own.

Either way, these seem to be something I may like to do, probably in my own way of course.

Mmmm...things to consider.

Today I share three photos from the local Mentryville area, we've visited several times over the years. It is not Wednesday and I will only be mostly wordless (since I had many thoughts when seeing these places).

Top pic: Peaks and Valleys, when life blankets you with new growth lightly sprinkled within the sturdy, old growth...hope and light may sneak in at the corners.

Locked up in life: When there are some ways out, even if you don't notice them at first, even if you don't think you can go around...you may be able to go through or you may eventually notice that the "T" pin lifts out easily, letting the gate swing wide and allowing you to move forward unimpeded.

Both Stand Tall: The brilliance of new dreams shine, while the burnt post of life remains, despite many odds that would predict otherwise. Both remain standing tall, holding us up as we go.

May you find numerous ways to express yourself
May you play with them, work with them
May you join in some games

Ode to Blue ~ Thanks to Deb

💙

While over at Deb's...I fell deep into a Blue Rabbit Hole! Head on over to her place and take a peek!

Deb's Blue Post

Link

Remember when LeAnne was all the rage with this song?

The trail tonight began with this site (TATTER) from her post and...

led to this article, (GRADIENTS OF BLUE: BEYOND THE EARTH) - as I've always been a lover of hardware stores and paint chips.

While reading the article...I floated off to learning about what cyan  is and exactly what a cyanometer is...how to pronounce it, it's history etc. And that led to how to make one! (cue paint chip love)

The video on how to make one led me to this:

LINK

I'm not a huge Jazz gal, but I listened to some of it and I did notice this came out the year I was born 💙

All of this "blue-ness" reminded me about how my sister and I were just talking about book displays based on "I don't remember the title but its blue". If you do an image search of that phrase, you'll come across scores of creative librarian and book sellers displays.

LINK

Thanks to Deb, I've had a very enjoyable evening exploring, listening, watching, dreaming.

I am not taking the class she mentions, but am sure I'd have great fun with it or at least playing along, like I did tonight. And I'll for sure be keeping up with whatever she posts! So, for now, I'll continue rereading Blue Highways, which seems to fit perfectly into each era I read it (or parts of it). I read it back in 2020 (along with "The Bluest Eye" - haha - blue!) and it fit so well with the state of the world and our country. I know it still will from the little I've read again so far.

I remembered her "sky" knitting from so long ago and I was, of course, inspired to weave some blue and I've already pulled out the yarn tubs to look for "blue". I ended up pulling out all I could find. I also have some embroidery floss to consider.  I'd love to have '40 shades' to weave a cyanometer! I'll see what all I've got to work with, since I just completed yet another Medicine Bag and the little loom stands waiting. So far, I think my blue will contain some white ~ for all of the gorgeous clouds I see.

Lastly, you can bet you will continue to see beautiful blue skies here, as I am always looking...and sharing.

May you fall into glorious holes

May you find lightness and inspiration there

May you bring that back to ground level with you and carry on

Today

 ~~~~
We left with the moon this morning, which became many other shapes, trying to avoid capture.
Can you find the moon among the dots or within the squiggles?
Taking photos through a morning windshield, an adventure for sure!
Nope, those are not stars, but morning mist on a well-driven windshield!
Nope, those are not extra moons, but streetlights and camera trickery!
From dots to squiggles, an electronic delight!
Further down the road, the sun came up in the most beautiful way!
~~~~

Today I really liked THIS!

Please do go have a look and check out the links at the bottom too.

It had me thinking of so many of you all.

The weavers, the word lovers, the ones of the sea and poetry.

Do read & look, I believe you'll enjoy.

Something is Wrong

Something is wrong now

I can't comment on my blog

Things flicker and flash

Maybe I can figure out this weekend, maybe not?

I stink at this stuff, even more than I used to.

Good Idea

 At Liz's request and with the words of many of us in my head, I went back to 2011.

I clicked on June, thinking to join Jude in that same month.

This is what I found and it really could not be more perfect.

June 26, 2011

My blog, just over a month+ old, some of the same visitors - even with a name change!

Hi Hazel 😁

Like a pendulum, June 2011 was a tough time and a good time for me.

Something had ended badly and I had been about a year into this Spirit Cloth World as I used to call it.

I find it curious and important that we are still here, talking about some of the same things.

Really, this fascinates me.

But, I find it even more important...a treasure really, that we are still here together...

the community we've become.

Finding and Getting Lost

 ←🧭 →→→

(One side)

←🧭 →→→

If you need to get lost for some time, try this...

My Garden of a Thousand Bees

Such a fascinating look at bees, with truly wild photography!

AND/OR

Try out one, or both, of the links below to check out the story of Helen Jean Taylor, an amazing potter and person of community.

←🧭 →→→

If you need to get lost, finding beauty, inspiration, and community...

Check out my page (also above) for other's blog/web homes.

It is a work in progress, but I did make some big changes today.

Looking for The Same Old Place

←🧭 →→→

I've completed two more CMB using the green warp yarn.

That brings the count up to: 18, I think...I may have to do some re-counting to check on that!

2 are set aside for Mo & Rod, when mail is more easily delivered

2 are set aside for others, but may go out as CMB instead (we'll see)

When I started making these 'green warp' bags, we made guesses as to how many it would make...

"I said 30 and he said 20...we both revised and I said 42 and he said 30"

Those estimates from the first 'green' post may need to be revised again!

←🧭 →→→

Upon heading out today, the first thing that got my attention was the Very Loud Song of tiny birds.

There were SO MANY! And their songs, joined at one time was SO LOUD! I thought J. would be able to hear it due to the volume, but the pitch was just too high for his hearing range. Moments like this have me longing for a way to record and play back for him in a way he could hear. Their songs were marvelous!

Can you see them better now? All of those tiny dark dots are birds! Amazing!

←🧭 →→→

Today ended up being a new version of our outing last time. Stopped over to pick up something, using the afore mentioned gift card...then before coming home, we headed up that canyon to see if the bags were gone. The one on the gate was and I sure hope it was the little girl who found it! We then got carried away taking a drive in that general area (and forgot to look for the two at the park, which I'm sure are gone as well). One thing I discovered today was that I had absolutely no idea how many houses were back there! Seeing all of the houses, which were built in an area that was raw land when I moved here 30+ years ago or when he lived here as a teen, is not something we are fond of. It's so crowded with over-sized tract houses and large SUV's (even though many of the houses have 3-car garages!). For me, us, it just symbolizes so much of what is wrong with our country's attitudes and values these days.

However, we were curious about the possibilities of other hiking places, it was a beautiful day and I was in no hurry to go back into "The Box" (our apartment), so we went on a drive-about and then I came home for further learning.

Stevenson Ranch

You can see what it looked like before in this Bare Land photo. I lived here then and remember the building of the Marketplace and new houses, I just didn't realize the size of the destruction project. I also remember how those of us not thrilled with this building used to joke about all of the "stepford wives" coming down to shop at the new Walmart. Obviously extravagant sameness is not my thing.

←🧭 →→→

I became curious about why one of the roadways was completely closed off and learned about it:

Document

This led me to a map or two.  Yay! I love seeing the whole, all of the pieces put together and so many of the places we've been or drive on a regular basis. When I looked at the wider view, I thought I could practically put a dot for all of my old "drive" or "hike" posts in every area shown! wouldn't that be fun, to have the skills to make your own interactive pop-up maps?!

~BREAK~

Okay, so you CAN do this!!! Just a quick Google Search Away

Of course, many of them have a cost involved and are quite complicated in the amount of choices, but it still looks so fun in a creative thinking way.

I may get seriously lost in this!

←🧭 →→→

Wider Area Map

←🧭 →→→

As it turns out, Mentryville, from my last post is a MRCA park, which I then read all about. I discovered they kinda mean business about those parking fees - haha.  Also learned that the road J. took a short walk up is probably old Oil Company land (and yes, there are "no trespassing" signs now!) But, more importantly, I learned that many of the places we go are a part of this system. Interesting. The learning really never stops.

MRCA Park

For whatever reason, my love of maps?...my interest in going into nature?....my fire-tracking?...at any rate, I really have enjoyed looking at these different maps and seeing all of the Open Space, all of the shapes of green to show these parks or other open land.

←🧭 →→→

These old, long memories of Judy Stevens (written in 1997) were interesting as they contain so many locations I have traveled to, explored as day trips, have personal memories of or visit on a regular basis. I even learned a word, which I somehow had never seen/heard before (wonder why that is?). Yes, I still listen to the recorded  pronunciation every time!

née

Judy Stevens's last paragraph states...and I agree~ "No one wishes to live in the past, but I do believe that in today's ultra-technical society, it would be advantageous for our youth to comprehend and pursue some of those uncomplicated activities which so often afforded us some peace of mind while they live their lives in the fast lane."

Yes, both, right? Getting out there and fussing with a computer to read & learn or make your own map! Balance, right?

~~NOTE~

I have overloaded this post with content and links. It helps me to put it all down in one place...these posts sometimes have a mind of their own...I am fully aware that you, as a reader, may not read the whole post or follow all of the links and that is okay by me! Maybe you'll even be inspired to learn more of your own area! Enjoy however you do 😀

←🧭 →→→

May you never stop learning and sharing (I think I always say this!)

May you never be embarrassed  to say what you don't know or to ask for help

May you hear the songs of birds and get lost now and again
