A Week and A Weekend

Time moves in uneven blocks.
The long block stretches out, sometimes in a blur.
The short block flies by, leaving me wanting more...before another long block starts again. I am picturing my life as these rectangles.

Lunch break, walk out to Crow calling loudly, announcing something unknown to me. "Hello", I say and go my way. I admire his vocal strength, the beauty of the Jacaranda tree where two nests rest - waiting.

The next day, right under this spot, I find a long Crow feather. Many inches of shiny black spirit. I wonder which Crow dropped it? The one I saw?

Saturday, between the dentist and the eye doctor I spy another long Crow feather on the grass near a commercial building. I wonder if anyone else has found joy in seeing it?

Commute Time: A crate of goats in a pick-up truck, industrial area of Sun Valley, CA.  Makes one wonder.

This week Lunch Drawings were of "Critters" in Capes! Monday (top left) was going to be a Dog, similar to the one I drew for Saskia. Yeah right. This one is wearing shoes of some sort 😉 I added a cape to keep drawing and thus the week began! Tuesday's "Strong Critter" is a wiggly thing with really only one muscle to see and a very wide 'second position'. Heehee. On Wednesday, I thought I'd try for a Bobcat, since some of the neighbors here saw one right outside the back door to the parking lot, by the trashcan. It's hard to tell from this pic, but one of his feet ended up looking backwards. 🤣 The fact that I stink at drawing somehow cracks me up. On Thursday, that poor Rabbit-like thing got blown off his feet! Ears were easy, but how to draw arms in a gust of wind?! ha And last of all, Friday, the jaunty lil Piggy did a song and dance for me. I wanted to add a top hat, but I didn't want to hide his ears, so I left well enough alone.

I wonder what will come out of my pen next week?

Also in this moleskin journal are the lyrics to a few songs that I like to sing, that we love, that I often forget some of the words to.  Friday before work I sang them to myself. What a good place to be, right?! Drawing and singing.

I spontaneously remembered that I have this small "Airline Bag" that belonged to my son. It was bought at a yard sale for change. With it in the photo you see "Farmer Man" also bought at a yard sale at a very old house on the town square, Minden, NV, 1982. He cost 10 cents and my two year old son paid, handing the kind elder a shiny dime. His doll "Baby" (whom I've written about before) came from that same house/lady. She had many antique dolls. Farmer Man has been a staple in my house ever since.

Anyway, the Airline Bag (with the "L" pronounced as a "Y", because he did not have the "L" sound yet) was a favorite for car rides...just big enough to take a few goodies with him and a great way to learn how to work zippers! He had another one (can't think of the airline) that was a bit bigger, but this one the first and his favorite.

Any little figures, like Farmer Man, whether they were human or animal or something else altogether, were called "friends". Both of my children had a large amount of these lil bits of fun! Some came from McDonalds 'Happy Meals' - remember those? Do they still do that? I've been away from that world for a very long time. Farmer Man is the last and just waiting for his new small friend, Orlo.

Back to airlines...do you remember those old Western Airline commercials..."the only way to fly" ~ and then the flash of destinations on the tail wing?  You can watch one (10 seconds) HERE. Our dear family friend made a game of trying to guess the locations, before they flashed on the TV at the close of the commercial. Ah, back when TV was new, charming even. sigh.

I went to the dentist and got my new glasses this weekend. I like them, even if the tightness needs adjusting. They are different colors than I usually get, which is fun. I may be kinda hard to tell, but I did not want to put a giant me here!

The Saturday sky was swept with wispy clouds and a beautiful shade of blue, not seen in a while, what with all of that May Gray and June Gloom. I couldn't get enough of the artistic brushstrokes everywhere!

I also have not been able to get enough of this song, which has been playing in my head for days. Then I stumbled onto this lil gal doing the TikTok dance challenge to it. Such a doll baby.

May you try something new

May you hold onto the old that you still love

May you float away in a beautiful blue sky

Back Again

Back again to The Railroad Bridge...a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Rolling hills, trees past their prime...lizards and views from further off than ever before.

The mustard is so tall! The trees, so thick!

Today there were lots of bikes out, e-bikes.

And birds up in the nest again...thick growth and the scent of my childhood summer camp.

 I love this bridge...the dark metal against the blue sky and green of the trees.

All 5 of the bracelets were gone, some ripped right off of their hanging strings! I threw the old strings in the the trash and secretly smiled to myself...a gleeful smile at the joy of surprising unknown folks.

But, I did come home with a found bit of a rusty, heavy old bolt. It's already added to the dye pot.

May you appreciate repetition that comes your way

May you enjoy every little treasure

May you breathe deep special memories

Mid-June 2023

There were some beautiful flowers recently. They make me happy to look at them. In that top photo, I'm reminded of when that kind of ice plant was all of the rage for hillsides in the 80's - 90's. It is a pretty plant, for sure.

How grand it was to see really good looking brussels sprouts at the local grocery. And look how big they were!! I haven't had any in so long. Soon, she says to self. Soon.

I found this drawing. Perhaps when I was considering the leather pouch? It could look great, made by 'someone' (not me 😉)

David Bird website and FB page

I found this fun art and thought of Grace and Saskia. I am glad I read his description box on the video to learn the awareness and care he takes to keep the birds safe. The little acorn faces are adorable!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last week looked different than the other weeks of 2023. Here are some bits and pieces of the past week.
I put on a Happy Face...shirt...and off I went! What did I see?
This beautiful orchid came home with me Monday.  I'm not the best at keeping these alive, but it sure is pretty to look at right now.
This stretch of road now has protected bike paths. Lots of white dividers make the street far more narrow and less room for parking. I've actually never seen bike riders on this part of the road in the 10 years (about) I've been driving it. Mmmm? Plus and motorhome folks that were living near the Public Storage have had to move on to...? Where?
On Tuesday, a candle was lit. It is one of those tall ones, which has been lit many, many times...so holds many memories, losses, loves.
The Yuccas (and everything else!) are in bloom. The growth right now is so different than in the past. There is less of the grasses and so much more of the scrub brush. It was hard to get a photo, but the hills are covered with thick little bushes in a way I don't recall before. There are those yellow flowers everywhere!
On other parts of the drive, I noticed lots of other blooming plant life. There were really big, old trees blooming like mad! Magnolia, Jacaranda, Orange - filled with oranges!  There were all sorts of flowers. Some were: geraniums, roses, giant bushy daisies, huge sunflowers and hollyhocks as tall as a house!
Each week day I drew a bird at lunch...this is them as they came to me...Monday = tutu bird, Tuesday = acorn bird, Wednesday =hiding bird, Thursday = sun bird and Friday (actually thought of on Friday, but drawn on Saturday, as Friday just didn't allow for it) = song & dance bird. I wonder what will come to me next week?
~~~~~~

Today I was back at the railroad bridge. I was kind of surprised to see how much water there is, still! And there was a lizard friend too. I left 5 surprise bags of little bracelets 🙂. I imagine children, biking or walking with their parents noticing the little bags hanging there, each one with a "free - enjoy!" tag. I'm kind of itching to go back tomorrow and see if any are gone!! This seems to be my go-to spot for CMB and other goodies. It was super warm while I was there 91 degrees! Maybe the May Gray and June Gloom are coming to an end?

May you remember beauty, wherever you are

May you find fun ways to give

May you be the kind of 'bird' you want or need to be

What We Give Away

 what we give away

and what we long for

when what is gone is

no longer remembered

what are we left with?

what can we never give away?

which parts of ourselves

can't be altered?

I've had thoughts of who we are over time, with and without our stuff. Who are we at our core? How does that remain or change?

Which things matter...when and for how long?

~~~~~~
Found~ While cleaning out papers, and stumbling over what should be done with them, I found 4 typed bits and one handwritten paper of notes and one handwritten quote from a book. This brought me joy, as the task at hand was a lesson in confusion and frustration.
  You can read a book review here, "How the Water Feels to the Fishes" by Dave Eggers. I remember checking this out at our library, so many years ago.  I noticed how this post writer chose the same 'story' that I had written down all of that time ago. I like how I felt the need to write down this story and wrote down the page number too, placed value in that...that it was on pg. 11 ~ and that I was touched by this writing.
Here is what I found typed on four separate pieces of paper...ripped so I had kept just the strips of thoughts or information.
  • "Go often to the house of thy friend; for weeds soon choke up the unused path" ~ Scandinavian Proverb
  • March 26, 2005 Sometimes when your cup 'runneth over' you spend so much time cleaning up the mess, that you never get to relax and enjoy what you have. Sometimes enough is enough.
  • Thursday June 30, 2005 ~ "Try a thing you haven't done three times. Once, to get over the fear of doing it. Twice, to learn how to do it. And a third time, to figure out whether you like it or not." ~Virgil Thomson (advice given at the age of 93)
  • "A light, humorous style of fixed form poetry. Its usual form consists of five lines with the rhyme scheme aabba; lines 1,2 and 5 contain three feet, while lines 3 and 4 usually contain two feet. Limericks range in subject matter from the silly to the obscene..."
What I found so curious to ponder was why did I feel the need to save these? Additionally, why did I type them up in the first place? Why were they together in this stack of financial paperwork? Where had they previously been? I am curious about Human Nature overall, not my own psyche. We are curious beings who do curious things.
~~~Found~~~

I found these notes and needed to refresh my memory of where it had come from. I found the video (which I actually did remember) and lots of other storytelling ideas...

Google search "Brian reed the craft of storytelling".

Storytelling, in its many forms has always been of interest to me.

Slowly, but surely I'm making headway in the bedroom projects. The cleaning of the bookshelf had several books being put aside for passing along. These are some of them...all filled with such beautiful and inspiring pages!

Life is a Verb by Patti Digh

Visual Chronicles by Linda Woods and Karen Dinino

Collage Sourcebook (Out of print)

Fabric Art Journals by Pam Sussman (Out of print)

...and a Mr Rodgers book too!

The bookshelf always looks so nice cleaned up. I had thought I was ready to part with more than I really am at this moment. Most of the books are now older, well-loved and family books. Books with a strong pull and many memories, but not read anymore. Books that are old friends, ready to hang around for a while longer.

May your stories be filled with all of the best elements for the telling and remembering

May the items you live with hold a dearness that sustains you

May you embrace, rotate and share (in one way or another) both

June 2, 2023 ~ A Lullaby & A Story

 My posting has been spotty, but I did want to put this here to remember it. I fell upon this video the other night and was so touched. There is something about a parent and child, in the arts, together...can't quite find words for the deepness it brings.

Their voices blend so beautifully.

I'll never tire of James Taylor and the other music makers of my youth...such a big piece of my heart and of who I am.

After watching this one, I came across an old performance from 1971. Look how young they look! Carole King was adorable and that band of fantastic musicians...for all of these years! Amazing! This had me thinking of when we saw JT & CK in 2010. What a great show it was!

~~~~
This led me to thinking I'd change out my "tea cloth - bulletin board" in the kitchen. I took down all of the 2023 cards and put up History instead.
From overflowing, to bare, to minimalist! I may add a bit more, if the mood strikes. The song above was the inspiration for this change.
An old James Taylor head shot from the early 1970's and an old trifold Mud Slide Slim insert (I think). Oh how we loved him!  I wrote about the Lou Rawls photo back in 2021. I got the autographed "Smoke Signals" photo at one of our local Pow Wows years ago. Irene Bedard was there giving out the pics and she was so sweet. I wrote about that favorite movie HERE. The "Ten Beers After" is an old band pic of J's. He's playing base. "Fine Stout Blues" 😁 The zipper-mouth man postcard was my son's as a child. I gave to to him...we thought it was pretty funny! The Big Pickle is a copy of a card I gave to my niece as a very little girl, since she was a Pickle Queen! I later used it to make a print onto fabric, which was then turned into a story telling doll and teaching set. I parted with it long ago, but the whole set is back with me again. I love Pickle Woman ❤️
It will be fun to have these out for a while. Thanks go out once again to Liz for the Tea Towel, which I turned into our revolving bulletin board. It works great with just enough space for some, barely holding too much. Perfect. Plus, I love that it is impermanent.
A Current Project...
Book: The Mitten by Jan Brett
Animals: Purchased on Amazon
Mitten: Gifted by Dee of Pattern and Outrage
~~
I've been planning this for a while. A fun gift for my grandson. The book belonged to his dad and aunt, one of a few Jan Brett books in our collection. As soon as Dee sent me the one mitten all that time ago...I started planning, problem solving and scheming. I was able to find each animal in the story, with many left over for more play fun. Today we tried it out. I read and J. put each animal into the mitten. They fit! They did take up more room than I expected, considering they are pretty small. The animal's proportion  in relation to one another is quite wacky. For instance, the mouse is one of the biggest animals! haha Also, the colors of two animals do not match those in the illustrations (the mouse is brown in the book and the rabbit is white). Lastly, the mitten is not pure while as it is in the story. But, guess what? None of that matters! If it is noticed by the three year old at all...it could be a very good conversations starters or creative story telling of their own. Sounds fun to me 🙂
The bottom photo shows the mitten stuffed with the story animals and all of the "extra" animals that came from purchasing a preselected animal set. But, I figure the more the merrier! I laugh at the size of that frog in comparison to the others! ha
Speaking to a friend, I was reminded of two wonderful, wordless picture books from my children's childhood. Both are by Jan Ormerod...Sunshine and Moonlight
May your old memories remain sweet
May your new memories become cherished over time
May your sense of self float easily through time
